Okay, people, is it just me, or has the past week or so been plagued by problems with communication? I mean, obviously the big one is LJ and the crazy fandom people duking it out over the legal definition of obscenity.

Poor LJ. They can't win, can they?

Right-wing nutjob: You're hosting pedophiles! I'm telling!

LJ: *freaks out and deletes every single journal with 'pedophilia', 'incest' and 'lolita' as an interest.*

Fandom: Hey! Where' s my porn? *spams news with angry comments, sings pirate songs*

LJ: Whoops, sorry about that. *undeletes journals* We'll try to be a little clearer in future.

[a few months later]

LJ: Hi, here are some guidelines to think about, only we're going to post them on lj_biz, which nobody reads, and we're going to post them while fandom is too wrapped up in the countdown to the Potterdamerung to even care. Okay?

Fandom: *is too wrapped up in the countdown to the Potterdamerung to even care*

LJ: All righty, then! *starts reviewing journals and deleting ones that could be viewed as obscene under current federal law*

Fandom: WHAT THE SHIT!!

LJ: Well, you told us to look at things first, and we did. And we decided that these didn't fit the guidelines we casually mentioned, particularly regarding the Literary, Artistic, Political or Scientific value that explicit material needs under the Miller Test to avoid being considered obscene.

Fandom: *huffily* What, so you're all ART critics, now?

So, yeah.

Meanwhile, Neil Gaiman is feeling grumpy because of journalists who are misquoting and misunderstanding things.

And yesterday, my phone didn't let me know that I'd gotten a certain text message from Mr. TBH the way it usually does, which means I spent about six hours unnecessarily freaking out until I went to check something and found the message.

And don't even get me started on arguments over words, definitions and implications.

The usual routine is to blame Mercury for going retrograde, but it's not due for that again until, like, October or something. (I only really notice when somebody mentions it on metaquotes.) Is this just a me thing? Is anybody else having this problem? Is there something in the air, something in the water? Or am I just imposing patterns here?

Today I took pleasure in finding out the book I ordered from Amazon--20 Master Plots and How To Build Them--had arrived.

Today I learned how to render my entire journal into lolcat form.

Oh, I hear ya.

And I have friends in RL who are up in arms about LJ and going to be leaving and yadda yadda yadda and I'm like, "Uhm, Kiddie porn? HELLO?"

Seriously, I've seen the picture in question and I'm behind the ones with the banhammer. Even if the picture were of Harry Potter being miraculously aged up into the age of consent/adulthood, the fact remains that the fictional character is as of latest writing 17, and that's all the non fandom people (ie the prosecutor, the judge and 9/10ths of the jurry) are going to be thinking.

Maybe it's because I'm a souless corporate drone but I have NO PROBLEM with them booting that kind of questionable content. After all, their servers.

As a digression, I was wondering just how many of these fandom people don't have paid accounts anyway? I know quite a few are paid, but I'd bet money the vast majority are free. So for people to be complaining about being 'customers', when they're not paying for services except by looking at ads that they're blocking with their browsers anyways.... yeah. I'm a souless company drone and I just don't get fandom.

::sighs::

I'd heard that one of the people who got nuked had just gotten a permanent account, as a gift.

Oops.

And, yes, many of the people who are wanking on the news page are going on about how their paid accounts will no longer be renewed and they'll be taking their ball and going home.

Which is entirely their choice and their priority. Me, I'm not here for the fucking porn, so I don't give a damn. It's possible one of my subconscious motives for upgrading to permanent was sheer spite.

I'm a big believer in First Amendment rights, but I'm also a believer in private property rights. You have the right to write or draw what you like (setting aside the fact that what you're doing is violation of intellectual property laws, which is a whole other rant), but that doesn't give LJ the obligation to host it, particularly if it could land them in trouble with the law.

I mean, did it ever occur to them that instead of waiting for the word on high and then toning things down, they could have toned things down first and then waited for the word on high to find out what they could get away with?

No! No! Must unleash Cat Macros of RAGE instead!!!

Even if they were sane, this really doesn't help them.

If you ever write a book I'll buy it. Just so you know. Loved that take on things. I do have friends that are thinking of moving, and I did do a GJ so I can keep up with them, but I'll probably be here more than anywhere. This was the first place I learned about blogging, so I'll probably hang for that reason alone.
