Birthday Presents!

So my sister is down here for a visit with her lovely daughter and we decided to go out together so she could get birthday presents for several people (including me) and then go and get coffee or some such social drink somewhere and catch up on life, the universe and everything without the baby interrupting. When you become a mom, these are rare and valuable moments.

We went to the bookstore where I'm working now and Kathy (that's my sister) told me to pick out a book, a CD and a DVD for me and that would be my birthday present. I picked out Coraline by Neil Gaiman for the book, Loud, Fast, Ramones (a best of compilation, take a guess who it's by) for the CD and set six of Monty Python's Flying Circus (the TV series) for the DVD. Kathy also got me a DVD of an anime flick called Cowboy Bebop and assured me it was wonderful. We did a little sneaky juggling with my credit card and her cash to land the employee discount.

Kathy phoned home to see how Caroline (that's my niece) was doing and found out that she'd been howling her head off from about the minute the door closed when we left and hadn't stopped the entire time. We decided to skip the social drink and head back home, where Kathy reassured her, fed her and put her to bed. I keeled over soon after, since I've been getting up at early hours with the job and all.

Work was work. I shelved a lot of children's books. When I got home, Kathy invited me to go out and have lunch with her and we went to the Righteous Room and had those fabulous salt and vinegar fries that they serve. Caroline was in her little baby seat on the table and was quite well behaved. After that, we went to the comic book shop to do the final round of birthday shopping and for the people who we knew there to ooh and aah over Caroline. Went home, I took a nap and a shower and played with the baby until dinnertime. Which brings me to just about . . . now.
