All You Need Is . . . No

So, Duran Duran's latest album, All You Need is Now is out on iTunes today.

Downloaded it. (Still have some $ leftover from an iTunes gift card.) Listened to it while working on titles.

It has completely failed to make an impression on me. I remain baffled at the people who are saying this is the best thing they've done since Rio.

They lost Warren; I lost interest. That's what it seems to come down to. Every album they've done since they kicked Warren out to let the Taylors back in has been entirely too bland for me.

But, hey, it's not my career, not my art, not my problem. It's not their job to please me. I'm not a Duranie any more, so my ego isn't hooked to their success or failure. I wish them well, honestly, but I don't see how anybody who isn't already a die-hard fan is going to give a shit about this. But maybe that doesn't matter--they seem to have gotten the hang of this social media thing and if they can maintain their tribe they should keep themselves comfortable for a long time to come.

Today I took pleasure in catching a glimpse of the start of the lunar eclipse. (Went to bed afterwards and dreamed of the full eclipse, which was quite spectacular in the dream.)

Today I learned what the new Duran Duran album sounds like.

I've only listened to part of the album tonight but so far... Ditto. Ditto. Ditto.

Oh and BTW.. Since Rio?? Really???? Notorious was pretty great. And so was Big Thing. And my personal favorite is Medazzaland.

I don't get some peoples.

After the first two albums, my favorite Duran albums are Medazzaland and Pop Trash. So go figure.

Then again, every new album is touted as THE BEST ALBUM EVAR when it first comes out. Then time passes and they're all "Um, well, maybe that was a bit of a mistake."

I actually like it very much. I was expecting nothing, since I thought RCM was craptastic, and was very pleasantly surprised. I didn't follow the whole recording process, I didn't read/listen to interviews, didn't watch the recent TV interviews, I wanted to focus exclusively on the music and it's been a nice surprise.
The whole 'best album since Rio' is nonsense, though, used only to draw the attention of those fans who lost interest in the band by the mid 80s and are now feeling nostalgic. I LOVE Notorious, Big Thing and the Wedding Album, I love Notorious more than Rio, so there.

Hey, if you like it, great! It might even still grow on me--it took years for me to really get into Medazzaland.

My only connection to the hype has really been the band's Twitter feed. They've been re-tweeting the hell out of various fans who have been gushing over how amazing the album is, so that's why I've been scratching my head. Then again, it's not like they're going to re-tweet the folks who are disappointed, are they?

I haven't seen any of the interviews or anything. I just got the single when it was released (was really disappointed, and hoped the rest of the album was at least better than that) and then got the album when it came out on iTunes. I'm sure the Duranies are frothing with happiness especially now that JT and SLB have Twitter feeds now that they can chirp at in the hopes of having their existence acknowledged.

It took me 6 months to be able to listen to Medazzaland and now it's one of my favourite albums.

I guess I jumped on the Twitter bandwagon, too - but mostly because I've only just started using it and need to figure out how it works and what it can do. The blindly devoted duranies freak me out, but I'll survive.

I do miss Warren, though. Those were the days...

Wait? You're on Twitter? Under what name? (I'm still @wonderbink.)

The blindly devoted Duranies have always freaked me out. I'm pretty much keeping my distance from all that.

I still need to check it out. Oddly, I got a free copy of a leak a few weeks ago, but I've just not been interested enough to play it yet. I just can't seem to get up the same excitement that I used to have for hearing a new album by them. :(

Man, I'm so out of the loop I didn't even get the leak!

I'm not all that worried about my lack of enthusiasm, personally. It means I can pour my passions into things that are closer to me, like my artwork, my writing and my hopeless crushes on certain hot boys with cool haircuts.
