Weekend Report

Friday I took another vacation day so I could cruise up to Chattanooga for Chattacon, a low-key little science fiction convention that's been going on for thirty years. My brother Sean threw one of his infamous room parties, this time with a sports theme--green carpet with lines on it, a "playbook" with calls like "Wardrobe Malfunction", "No Tipping" and "Just Wrong", Sean (and select helpers) dressed as referees and his wife Rozana dressed as a jeerleader. (No, that's not a typo. If you know Rozana, you know that's not a typo.) The hotel had just undergone a massive renovation and had put the kibosh on room parties, but Sean managed to get a dispensation from the general manager by assuring him that he was a professional and I think there was some song and dance about it being a 'corporate training event'. Whatever it was, it worked and we had a long and entertaining night without the man busting us.

Saturday, I slept very late, helped Sean pack up the party stuff and eventually made my way back home to have dinner with a bunch of Duranies. It was a fun evening and we all agreed we would have to do it again sometime. We're considering having a video-watching party as an alternative to the superbowl, but we'll see if we can find a living room to do it in.

I had intended to go to the EARL afterwards and see A Fir-Ju Well and Y-O-U play, but I was utterly exhausted and wound up just sacking out on the couch and then crawling into bed.

Sunday was more sleep and lots of internet catching-up. (I'm eleven pages away from reaching the current post on the "Learn Writing With Uncle Jim" thread at Absolute Write . . . so close!) I thought about doing poetry tonight, but it's bitterly cold and I'm more inclined to stay home and curl up with an Eddie Izzard DVD. So I think I may do that, instead.

Too bad you didn't come to java monkey. You missed a really good night.
And too bad I missed Chattacon. I have been a loyal attendee for ten years, but have sat out for the last two. I really enjoy the con because it's so intimate. You see the same people every year. Chattacon has always been my yearly vacation and I'm sorry I missed it. At least someone got to enjoy it!

No room parties? Wow, that must have been a sedate ChattaCon. How about the garden of Beer aka the Con Suite? Did it exist?

The room parties migrated to neighboring hotels, from what I could tell. The Con Suite was still in the same place.
