Things That Actually Happened

Inspired by the idea of Live Journal Rabbit Hole Day, my hope was to let my imagination run wild and add a layer of the surreal over the events of the day, the way they used to tint black and white photographs by painting them. So everything that I detailed would be, in a way, true. I took my imaginary friend to work today with me and cleared a space for him to sit. But the poor dear barely got a chance to get a word in edgewise, because work was constant and I had no time to dream of anything. I willed the clock to slow down by staring at it constantly so I could fit in everything I had to do.

Lunch I decided I needed an adventure. I drank a late breakfast, so I wasn't hungry, and I decided to go downtown. I parked in the parking lot of a hotel's decaying corpse, which only cost me three dollars. I walked down to a major office building, went through the revolving doors, past the desk, through the photographs and down and down the ramps and into a world of color and delight. Here was a crucifix with a Christ made of a metal coat tree. Here was a flattened, rounded Blue Angel plane rendered in bright blue crayon and surrounded by line drawings of unknown animals. Here was a massive tiger of rope and paint. Here was a Coke bottle as tall as I was, covered with houses, paths and flying people. What on earth could my vision conjure that could match these things that hung on the pale walls?

I drank it all in, returned to my car and went back to work. It was hard to fit my brain back into mundanity after the place I'd been, but the sheer amount of work I had to do soon buried me so deeply it didn't matter.

My imaginary friend watched over me patiently and followed me home.
