Quick and Dirty Semi-Meme

Please name five of your favorite books from your childhood. It's not a Top Five or a Desert Island list--just the first five that come to mind, with whatever commentary you deem fit.

Five of mine:

1. The Monster at the End of This Book. "Do you know that you are very strong?"

2. The Yellow Fairy Book. It was a compilation of slightly obscure fairy tales that, I think, Dover Publications put out.

3. The Annotated Alice. It was a printing of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass that had a zillion footnotes laced through it. Sounds a bit ponderous, but it was actually quite fascinating to me, even at a young age. Then again, I was reading the teacher's notes in the back of the Dick and Jane books when I was six, so there you are.

4. Yellow Submarine. It was a storybook of the film. What disturbed me as animation when I was small was somehow easier to take in book form.

5. The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Sadly, to this day I have not made it through the entire Chronicles of Narnia. I keep stalling out somewhere in the middle of A Horse And His Boy, and have never even started on The Magician's Nephew. But this one (which will always be in my heart the first Narnia book, despite C.S.'s preference that The Magician's Nephew be arranged before it to place things in narrative chronology) I read over and over again. I would even hide in my closet in the hope of opening a portal to another world.
